Call for Panelists for the 2019 National Communication Association convention: Survival and Thin Privilege in a Fatphobic Society

Thin privilege is under-researched, under-theorized, and generally under-discussed within communication studies. Akin to Nakayama and Krizek, who worked to map discourses of whiteness in communication scholarship to exemplify the ways in which it is deployed as an unmarked identity category, we seek to use this panel as a space to expose and discuss the nuanced ways thin privilege manifests in lived experience and underlies discourse of the body. The panel will be organized around individual mini-presentations, but we hope to dedicate the majority of the panel to discussion. While various methodological perspectives are welcome, we intend to organize the panel with a critical orientation to thin privilege, body size, fatness, and intersecting identities. We are interested in proposals that are grounded in critical fat studies scholarship and/or critical communication scholarship. We are particularly interested in the following themes, but welcome other ideas as well:

– Thin privilege and colonialism
– Intersections of thin privilege with other forms of privilege/oppression
– Mediated representations of thin privilege and/or thin privilege in pop culture
– Diet culture
– Thin privilege in discourses of “health” Lived experience as thin or not thin in relation to thin privilege
– Thin privilege as an under-discussed form of privilege
– Communication and thin privilege

FYI. Small graduate student research grants for feminist research

Janet Shibley Hyde Graduate Student Research Grants

Due: March 15, 2019 (2/year, deadlines March 15 & September 15)

These $500 grants are made possible through the generosity of Janet Shibley Hyde, PhD, who donates the royalties from her book, Half the Human Experience, to support feminist research by doctoral psychology students.

Eligibility: Applicants must be currently enrolled in doctoral programs in psychology. Past recipients of Hyde Graduate Student Research Grants are not eligible to apply. Because the purpose of this award is to facilitate research that otherwise might not be possible, projects that are beyond the data analysis stage are not eligible.


  1. Cover page with project title, investigator’s name, address, phone, fax, and e-mail address
  2. A 100-word abstract
  3. A proposal (5-page maximum, double-spaced) addressing the project’s purpose, theoretical rationale, and procedures, including how the method and data analysis stem from the proposed theory and purpose. (References are not included in this 5-page limit.)
  4. A one-page statement articulating the study’s relevance to feminist goals and importance to feminist research.
  5. The expected timeline for progress and completion of the project (including the date of the research proposal committee meeting if applicable). The project timeline should not exceed two years.
  6. A faculty sponsor’s recommendation, which includes why the research cannot be funded, or funded in full, by other sources. This letter should be attached to the email with the application materials. Please do not send it separately.
  7. Status of IRB review process, including expected date of IRB submission and approval. Preference will be given to proposals that have received approval.
  8. An itemized budget (if additional funds are needed to ensure completion of the project, please specify sources). Funds cannot be used for tuition, living expenses, or travel to present research at a conference.
  9. The applicant’s curriculum vitae
  10. All sections of the proposal should be typed and prepared according to APA style (e.g., please use 12-point font)

A group of psychologists (reviewers) will evaluate the proposals for theoretical and methodological soundness, relevance to feminist goals, applicant’s training and qualifications to conduct the research, and feasibility of completing the project.

Only one application will be accepted per student for each application deadline.  Applicants who are involved in multiple projects that meet the submission requirements should choose the project that best fits the evaluation criteria.

Within 18 months of receipt of the grant, recipients are expected to submit to the Hyde Grants Committee co-chairs a complete and final copy of the research document (e.g., a copy of the thesis, dissertation, or journal manuscript based on the sponsored research) along with a 500-word abstract/summary for publication in Division 35 newsletter. In addition, grant recipients shall acknowledge the funding source in the author’s notes in all publications.

Hyde Grant winners will be announced at the APA convention during Division 35 Social Hour. The names of the Hyde award winners may also be posted in Division 35 newsletter as well as on Division 35 website and the electronic mailing list.

WSC 2019: Abstract submission open

“Moving the Dial” in Weight Stigma Research and Resistance

We are now accepting abstracts for the 7th Annual International Weight Stigma Conference, being held on 27–28 June, 2019, in London, Ontario.

This year’s theme focuses on new research and theoretical contributions that move the dial on weight stigma and how to resist it. The two-day interdisciplinary program will cover the entire weight stigma research spectrum—from basic, to applied, to clinical, to policy—and feature an outstanding roster of international speakers and local experts. We encourage abstracts that offer novel and fresh insights and/or address existing gaps and open questions on how to bridge research and practice in this field, and challenge and resist weight stigma.

We are accepting abstracts for oral presentations and posters, as well as session proposals including brief symposia, round tables, debates, and workshops. FYI. Independent Social Research Foundation: Direct of Research vacancy


The Independent Social Research Foundation intends to appoint a Director of Research to lead the Executive Team of the Foundation, at the retirement of the current postholder during 2020.

The Director of Research is responsible for the academic activities and outputs of the Executive Team, in pursuit of objectives supported by the Academic Advisory Board and agreed by the Foundation Board.

Reporting to the Foundation Board, the Director of Research leads on the academic activities of the ISRF, including academic funding initiatives, workshops and colloquia, communication of research activities, and alumni relations. The Director of Research reports to both Boards on existing activities of the Foundation, makes recommendations for continuation, modification or cessation of such activities, and proposes potential new initiatives and projects. The Director of Research works to acquire knowledge of the Europe-wide research funding environment.


The ideal candidate for this position should have a Social Sciences or Humanities PhD, and probably currently hold a middle-ranking or senior academic or academic-related position. The ideal candidate will be able to work effectively, independently and sociably within a team and have a strong interest in promoting interdisciplinary research in a creative way.


This is envisioned as a five year (fixed term, renewable), full time post with one day per week dedicated to the postholder’s own research activities.

The salary is in the range of GBP 75-90k based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include 25 days annual leave (plus office closure days) and season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

FYI. Independent Social Research Foundation Early Career Fellowship Competition


ISRF Early Career Fellowship Competition (ECF5)

The Independent Social Research Foundation wishes to support independent-minded researchers to explore and present original research ideas which take new approaches, and suggest new solutions, to real world social problems.

The Foundation intends to make a small number of awards to support original interdisciplinary research, across the range of the social sciences, to be held from a start date no later than the end of December 2020. Scholars from within Europe are eligible to apply.

The award is intended to enable a scholar at the early-career stage to pursue his/her research full-time, for a period of up to 12 months; applications may be made by those whose sole or principal post is a part-time equivalent. The amount will be offered to buy out the costs of replacing all teaching and associated administration in the applicant’s home institution, and will be considered to a maximum of £50,000* per successful applicant. Within that sum, reasonable support for research expenses may be considered on a matched-funding basis with the host institution.

The applicant should normally hold a salaried position at an institution of higher education and research, and be within 10 years of PhD award. Career breaks may be taken into account.

*Applicants based in the UK must apply in GBP (£), up to the limit of £50,000. All other applicants must apply in EUR (€), up to a limit to be fixed – and stated on the relevant page of the ISRF Website – on 1st January 2019. The EUR (€) limit will not subsequently be adjusted in the event of GBP/EUR currency fluctuations.
